Blue Velvet is a rich Sweet Pea variety boasting ruffled flowers in a deep shade of purple-blue. Large flowers emerge on tall stems, with each stem bearing as many as 6 or 7 blooms. Flowering from June to October, these scented plants for garden use are highly fragrant and are ideal for cut flower arrangements, lasting up to 5 days in a vase indoors. These climbing plants benefit from a support in the form of a trellis or Sweet Pea obelisk to scramble up. They are easy to grow, preferring a sheltered spot in full sun in well-draining soil. Water well after planting and during dry spells to keep the soil evenly moist. Pinch the tips of young plants to promote bushy growth and an abundance of flowers and deadhead spent blooms to encourage further flowering. Also known by the botanical name Lathyrus odoratus, Blue Velvet Sweet Peas are a hugely popular cultivar due to their reliability and resistance to pests and diseases.
