Named after the famous former Prime Minister, Winston Churchill is a vibrant Spencer type Sweet Pea variety boasting large, ruffled flowers in a sumptuous shade of red. Flowering from June to September, these scented plants for garden use are delicately fragrant and are ideal for cut flower arrangements, lasting up to 5 days in a vase indoors. These climbing plants benefit from a support in the form of a trellis or Sweet Pea obelisk to scramble up. They are easy to grow, preferring a sheltered spot in full sun in well-draining soil. Water well after planting and during dry spells to keep the soil evenly moist. Pinch the tips of young plants to promote bushy growth and an abundance of flowers and deadhead spent blooms to encourage further flowering. Also known by the botanical name Lathyrus odoratus, Winston Chrurchill Sweet Peas are hugely popular with bees and butterflies, attracting plenty of pollinators into the garden.
