Dwarf Iris ‘Katherine Hodgkin’ is a real classic and all-time favourite, much loved for its excellent garden performance during the earliest months of spring. Above all, this RHS AGM variety features glamorous blooms formed of exquisitely patterned petals, featuring pale blue streaks and yellow glow. When it comes to Iris reticulata, this variety is classed as royalty, not only for its stunning looks, but for its reliability in putting on a stunning show just when the garden needs it most, come rain, snow or shine! To get the most out of these dainty bulbs, plant them in groups or drifts so that the flowers can really make a big impact. Their compact size makes them a fantastic choice for growing in patio containers or rockeries, but they’re also just as gorgeous positioned at the front of a border. Iris reticulata bulbs should be planted outdoors in October and November in a sunny position in moist, free draining soil. The bulbs should be planted with the pointed end facing upwards at a depth of 10-15cm, and position them around 10-15cm apart from each other. Dwarf irises are most eye-catching when planted in large groups or drifts running through borders or rockeries, but they also make fantastic compact plants for growing in patio containers where they can be admired close up. If planting in containers, use a loam based compost such as John Innes No. 2.
