The E390 metric coarse machine tap belongs to Dormer's "Shark Line", with a colour coded ring on the shank to indicate the material for which the tap is designed. The E390 is a White Shark tap and so is designed specifically for tapping short chipping abrasive materials like cast irons, and comes in nine sizes from M3 to M20. The tap is manufactured to conform to the German Institute for Standardization and is made from powder metal High Speed cobalt which gives superior performance and a longer tool life. The titanium aluminium nitride coating further increases performance when threading abrasive materials and the E390 has a straight flute so can be used to thread both holes which go all the way though the work piece (through holes) and holes which stop part way through the work piece (blind holes).
