Small gardens do not have a metre of spare patio. Balconies certainly do not. The Olsen & Smith 113L garden storage box answers that by going up rather than out: 46 x 43cm on the ground, 58.5cm tall, and 113 litres inside. Next to a standard wide storage box it gives back close to a fifth of the floor it would otherwise have taken, which is the difference between a chair fitting on the balcony and not. The height is doing real work. Upright things — a strimmer, a folded parasol base, wellies, a leaf grabber, tall bottles of feed — stand rather than lie across the bottom of a shallow box. Seat cushions stack on their edge instead of spreading flat. It is the same trick a tall kitchen cupboard plays on a low one. The lid is hinged and reinforced to 100kg, so it is a seat as well as a lid. On decking or by a back door that is a spare perch for putting boots on, or somewhere for a guest to sit, without giving up a second patch of ground to a chair. Because it is hinged rather than lift-off, it swings back on its own and stays there — nothing to balance against a wall while your hands are full, and nothing to go skidding down the garden in a gale. Weather is handled by NatureGuard by Olsen & Smith, which seals the box against rain, snow and strong sun. Cushions that go away dry come out dry. The front hasp takes a padlock — not supplied — which is a deterrent for cushions, tools and rather than high security. Every panel is moulded from 100% recycled polypropylene, and they clip together tool-free: no screwdriver, no drill, no bag of fixings to lose. The wood-grain finish is moulded through the material rather than printed on the surface, so it will not peel, flake or need oiling, and a hose down is the whole maintenance job. The dark anthracite reads as furniture against fencing, brick and render rather than as a plastic bin. In the box: the panels, the hinged lid and the fixings. It arrives flat and goes together in a few minutes. At 3.5kg empty one person can carry it into place, and move it later without emptying it first. A padlock is not included.
