Product Description Oxygen – the lifeblood for fish: Fish absorb oxygen from the water through their gills, and some do so through their skin or additional respiratory organs. For this purpose, there should always be at least 5 mg/l of oxygen (O2) in the water. This can be easily measured with an oxygen test (JBL PROAQUATEST O2). The lowest oxygen content is always measured in the morning. Oxygen is introduced into the aquarium water by air pumps with an air stone or by the water flow back from the filter, which moves the water surface. Aquatic plants only produce oxygen during the lighting phase – and at night they consume a small amount. That’s why it’s best to use an air pump in heavily planted aquariums at night. Additional aeration is also recommended when using many medications. This is also advisable for many anti-algae agents. A note about oxygen and CO2 addition: If you use a CO2 fertiliser system to supply your aquatic plants with the carbon dioxide essential for plant life, only use an air pump during the day if absolutely necessary (O2 content below 5 mg/l). Otherwise, the air stone will expel the CO2 you have added.
