Tulbaghia violacea, commonly known as Society Garlic, is a striking perennial known for its grey-green, aromatic foliage and soft violet flowers that bloom from midsummer into autumn. Its slender leaves release a rich garlic-like scent when brushed, while upright stems carry clusters of dainty, star-shaped blooms that add height, fragrance and colour to garden displays. As the season progresses, this variety becomes increasingly floriferous, delivering a vibrant, long-lasting display. Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit, Tulbaghia violacea is both decorative and resilient. It is semi-evergreen in mild regions, bringing colour and texture to the garden year-round. Perfect for damp borders, bog gardens, or the shallow edges of ponds, it thrives in moist soil and full sun. With virtually no maintenance required, this easy-going perennial is a reliable choice for adding ornamental value and soft movement to naturalistic planting schemes. How to Grow Light: Prefers a sunny position for best flowering. Temperature: Hardy in most UK regions; semi-evergreen in mild winters. Watering: Keep soil moist; ideal for damp borders or shallow pond margins. Feeding: Not essential; apply a balanced fertiliser in spring if desired.
