In the seventeenth century, a number of ironworks were established in Finland. The extensive forest areas in the former municipality of Pohja offer countless possibilities for hydropower to use thanks to the many rivers in the area. This makes this region the ideal place for the Finnish metal industry. The Antskog and Billnäs ironworks were established respectively in ca. 1630 and 1641. Fiskars in turn was opened in 1649 and is today one of the oldest companies in the Western world.
