A self-tapping screw is a screw that can tap its own hole as it is driven into the material, they are often referred to as self tappers. In America they are known as sheet metal screws as they are for use in sheet metal up to 3mm in thickness. Pozidrive countersunk head self tappers are used when a flush finish is required, with no part of the screw head protruding above the level of the item being fastened. All that is required to insert a self tapper is a pilot or punched hole to introduce the screw. They then form their own thread as the screw is driven into position.
