Herdwick is the fleece off the sheep that live on the Lake District fells, and it is not a soft wool. It is wiry, coarse and hard-wearing, in the natural range of greys the breed comes in - near-black on a young sheep, silvering as it ages. No dye is used at any stage. That coarseness makes it the wrong choice for anything worn next to the skin, and exactly the right choice for felting, needle felting, rug-making, upholstery stuffing and a long list of garden jobs. It holds a great deal of moisture without feeling wet, and it composts at the end of its life. Gardeners use it as a slug barrier and a moisture store around thirsty plants.
