A fantastic upright acer variety with lacy, fine foliage. Its variegated, light green, five-lobed leaves are beautifully margined with creamy white, with touches of pink in spring. In the autumn, the cream areas will turn a deep red before they fall; being deciduous, the branches will be bear in winter, bursting back into life in spring. Acer palmatum 'Butterfly' is best grown in a sheltered position in moist but well-drained soil in dappled sun or partial shade, as full sun and harsh winds can cause leaf scorch. Keep well-watered to avoid leaf damage. Compact and slow growing, it is ideal for smaller gardens and will form a 3m x 1.5m bush in 20 years. ideal for growing as a specimen plant in a pot, where it will remain more compact.
