Wisteria are perhaps one of the most memorable of all our climbing plants. In full flower they literally "cascade" with large racemes of often fragrant pea like flowers. Wisteria floribunda Violacea Plena, better known as Black Dragon or Yae-Kokuryū, is a superb deciduous climber that has been granted the RHS Award of Garden Merit. Black Dragon is a compact cultivar that has large racemes, of fragrant, pea-like, double violet purple flowers in May and June. The attractive light green leaflets emerge bronze and turn yellow in autumn. One of the more compact varieties it is suited to the smaller garden. Pefers a full sun location but will grow in semi shade in most free draining soils. It can easily be grown in a pot. Wherever you plant it, it will need something to grow up! When growing in a pot or other container. Use a good quality John Innes compost as this plant will be there a long time and peaty types of compost eventually degrade and become too packed and choke the roots.
