They are connected and strengthened by a diagonal metal rod that's 1/4" diameter that is WELDED in place! EZ Installation>The top hole in the bracket is a "keyhole". So just install one of the provided screws a bit proud of the sheetrock and hang the bracket in place. Then, lock everything in with a screw at the bottom of the bracket. Add your shelf and attach it from below with 2 screws. We even provide a hole in the back of the hook in case you're using a wood dowel, so you can secure that as well!
