Every mat in this set is woven by hand from natural water hyacinth, the broad-leaved plant that grows across the waterways of southern Vietnam. The stems are harvested, sun-dried until they turn a warm honey-beige, then plaited over and under by weavers who have spent years at the work. Nothing is pressed out by machine, which is why no two mats carry exactly the same grain. The set contains 6 round mats, each 25 cm across — enough room for a dinner plate with a clear border of weave still showing around the rim. The weave is thick enough to sit between a hot serving dish and a wooden table, and dense enough to lie flat instead of curling at the edge. Looking after them takes seconds.
