The Warsaw Pact – a common name in the West, known as the Warsaw Treaty or Warsaw Treaty Organization in the official parlance of the participating states – was a military assistance pact of the so-called Eastern Bloc under the leadership of the Soviet Union from 1955 to 1991. It was established with the Warsaw Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance (Warsaw Treaty for short) and during the Cold War formed the counterpart to the US-American NATO alliance, the North Atlantic Pact. Economically, the Eastern Bloc countries had been united in the Council for Mutual Economic Aid since 1949. With the fall of the Iron Curtain, the strict structures of the Warsaw Pact increasingly eroded, after which it was officially dissolved in 1991.
