Harris is a bit of a riddle in the world of Sharpe. In the first novels he was described as a small clever-looking man who was a sheep shearer and another rifleman, Isaiah Tongue, was the bookish one. But once Jason Salkey took on the role in the television version of Sharpe’s Rifles, Bernard Cornwell started writing the character to more closely match Salkey’s portrayal.
