In Greek mythology, Pan is the shepherd god. He actually has a human upper body and the lower body of a goat buck. His parents are the messenger of the gods Hermes and the nymph Dryope. She exposes him out of horror at the hooves and horns after his birth. Hermes brings the child to Olympus, but there is no space for his son here either. So Hermes takes him to the island of Crete, where the god Dionysus lives. He is completely enchanted by the special child, and because everyone likes him on the island, Dionysus gives him the name Pan: the all, the whole, the one and all. He is cheerful, carefree, light-lived. Bouncing and dancing, he drives around in mountains and forests of the island. That's why Pan is also the god of forests and mountains. Pan is also the protector of shepherds, fishermen and hunters. In addition, Pan is lustful, but because of his appearance, he has no happiness in love with the nymphs he uses to recreate. He falls in love with the nymph Syrinx, praised by all for her beauty, but she scares at his sight and flees. Pan continues to pursue her, and in her panic hardship, she implores her patron goddess Artemis to turn her into a reed. When Pan finally holds his adored in his hands, she has turned into a reed. In order to always have his beloved with him, he cut the reed into pipes of different lengths and tied them together. This is how the pan pipe was created, which Pan named after the nymph Syrinx. Pan cannot be driven away by the rejection and continues to dance through the forest and the fields. It is especially fun to roar out loud and scare the herds. Full of fear, the animals get out of themselves and take the escape rapidly. Therefore, the word panic also comes from the god Pan.
