The falcon-headed Ra (also Re) is the ancient Egyptian sun god. The belief was that the sun itself is a God and therefore is not created by a divine being. Ra can be called probably the most important ancient Egyptian god until the late periods. Its name simply means "sun". The idea of the cyclical sunrun, which the God performs in his bark as a day and night journey of twelve hours each, is synonymous with the eternal repetition of creation and all regenerative forces. The most important cult place was in Helipolis, the sun city since the Old Kingdom, while the rulers of the 5th Dynasty special buildings for the Ra cult, the so-called sun sanctuaries, built at Abusir. The most impressive cult symbol are the obelisks, whose gold-plated tips were defined as the seat of the sun god. Probably the most famous sanctuary of the Ra-Harachte was built under Ramses II. (19th dynasty) in Abu Simbel. The outstanding God relationship of every ruler from the middle 4th Dynasty is also reflected in the title designation "Son of Ra".
