Poseidon was entrusted with the sea as domination in the division of the world by his brother Zeus and is therefore the sea god in Greek mythology. He was witnessed by his parents Kronos and Rheia. His siblings included Zeus, Hades, Demeter, Hera and Hestia. Poseidon was among the twelve Olympic gods and his symbol is the trident. Together with his wife Amphitrite, Poseidon testified her son Triton, the horse Areion and the daughters Rhode and Benthesikyme. Poseidon as a sea god was often worshipped by sailors at the time, and so they often threw a horse into the sea as a victim to gain a safe ride from Poseidon.
