The history of the USS Kidd (DD-661) was founded on April 23, 1943 as a destroyer of the Fig. letcherclass in diinitially set. The ship was named after him in honor of Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, who died during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor aboard the USS Arizona. The crew quickly gave the ship a unique character. During the maiden voyage through New York Harbour, a pirate flag (Jolly Roger) waved at the mast, and on the chimney flaunted the painted figure of a pirate - Captain William Kidd. Thanks to these details, the destroyer received its famous nickname: "Pirate of the Pacific". Already in its first months of service, the USS Kidd was characterised by an exceptionally aggressive combat style and high operational effectiveness. During World War II, she participated in operations off Wake Island, Rabaul, Tarawa, Guam, Leyte and Okinawa, among others. The ship secured the fleet against kamikaze attacks, rescued shot pilots and conducted coastal shootings. On April 11, 1945, it was hit by a kamikaze aircraft; but despite heavy losses, the crew kept the ship in battle. After World War II, the USS Kidd also served during the Korean War and the Cold War era. The ship was decommissioned on June 19, 1964 and transferred to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet. In 1982, the ship was acquired by the Louisiana Naval War Memorial Commission and opened as a museum ship to visitors.
