WATCHMAN'S PROVEN FORMULA OF 1907 Canker is caused by a tiny mite that is often dropped from foxes and picked up in grass from dog walks or even from your garden ******** This original, genuine Thornit has been manufactured and distributed by the same family for four generations. The amazing, over 100-year-old formula is made up of ingredients that are carefully balanced to help battle mites. ******** The main ingredient is Iodoform which was used in early dentistry and for wounds and sores and has a distinctive antiseptic, medicated smell that helps discourage mites. Boric acts as an effective antifungal and antiseptic to help with the damage that is caused by the animal’s constant scratching and Zinc Oxide acts as a drying and curing agent that helps with irritation and to stop the itch cycle ******** The ingredients are mixed together and ground down to a powder as finely as possible to help you with easy administration ******** SYMPTOMS **** In the majority of cases the symptoms are scratching **** head shaking **** rubbing of ears on the floor **** licking of paws and under the tail, resulting in general distress for your pet. These problems are caused by the mites hiding in warm dark places and constantly chewing at the skin ******* There is often brownish wax and scabs inside the ears that can be dry or weep slightly which causes a smell that may worsen over time **** There can be red raw sores **** inflammation and blood clots caused by constant scratching **** Sometimes the ears smell of yeast which is often mistaken for a yeast infection ******** The standard treatment of drops and antibiotics gives only temporary relief. DO NOT REMOVE WAX. **** Under normal circumstances powder should NOT be put in ears but the brown wax acts as a cork **** Crush down any small lumps of thornit that may have formed due to moisture entering the bottle or pouch when it is opened **** Do this by tipping a little bit onto a plate and crushing with the back of a spoon ******** TREATMENT - Apply a pinch of powder using the end of a spoon and sprinkle AROUND the ear hole **** Gently massage it in with your fingers from the outside or work the powder in with a small soft brush **** Alternatively, load up the brush and apply directly, working the powder into the areas around the ear hole **** Do not worry if a tiny bit falls into the ear during application as it's such a small amount needed mm **** FOR DOGS WITH HAIRY INNER EARS, slightly more powder is needed and should be worked well into the hair **** Apply Thornit twice a day. Relief comes with the first dose but the treatment should continue for 1-5 days (usually 3) **** When the brown wax starts to move and come out - stop the treatment. This means the mite is dead and the wax will come away, pushing out the powder and leaving a clean ear **** Allow the wax to come out naturally and gently clean away only what you can easily see **** Do not poke anything down into the ear hole to remove the wax **** A pinch of Thornit in each ear once a week will keep the animal free from re-infection ******** PAWS **** Mites can get between the claws, toes and around the pads, making the animal first lick the paws constantly, turning the pads to jelly, then they tear out their fur and finally nibble a hole in themselves **** TREATMENT **** Load up a small soft brush with thornit and work well between the toes and around the pads or hold the paw in a plastic bag containing a small amount of Thornit. **** Work powder between claws, into pads and a little way up the leg ******** INTENSE BODY SCRATCHING **** A vet in Australia has isolated the mite that causes intense distress in dogs who are in constant motion, scratching and biting all parts of their body.
