Nine Mans Morris traces its roots back to the Roman Empire, where it was played on wooden boards etched with lines forming a grid. The game gained popularity throughout Europe during the Middle Ages, becoming a favourite pastime among nobles, peasants, and even soldiers. The game is played by two players, each starting with nine pieces, usually called men or stones. The game progresses in three stages: placement, movement, and mill form. During the initial phase, players take turns placing their pieces on vacant intersections of the grid, aiming to form a line of three of their own men along any straight line. Once all the pieces have been placed, the game transitions to the movement stage. In the movement stage, players take turns moving their pieces along the lines on the board, one step at a time, to adjacent empty intersections. The goal is to create mills, which are formed by aligning three pieces along a straight line. When a mill is formed, the player who created it may remove one of their opponents pieces from the board, excluding pieces in an opponents mill. When a mill is formed, they can remove an opponents piece, but only if the opponents piece is not part of a mill. Once a piece is removed, it is permanently out of play, reducing the available options. The movement stage continues until one player is reduced to only two pieces or is unable to make a legal move.
