The regular cast includes George Cole, Joyce Grenfell and the hilarious Alastair Sim appearing as both Millicent Fritton, the much put-upon headmistress, and as her brother Clarence. Based around artist Ronald Searle's schoolgirl characters and made by the directing/writing/producing team of Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat, these films also star Terry Thomas, Frankie Howerd, Reg Varney, Sid James and Beryl Reid.
