• An absolute treat for collectors of post disco New York dance music. In the immediate aftermath of the disco boom, dance music went back underground and started to experiment. Funk, electro, soulful divas and early hip hop all mixed together at clubs such as the Paradise Garage, forming the roots of the dance explosion that would see hip hop, house and Madonna take over the music world. • Taken from two of the main New York-based labels – Vanguard and Spring – who had their fingers on the pulse, we gather together ten examples in their original full-length versions. The sounds stretch from established artists such as Fatback discovering (and to a certain extent pioneering) both rap and electro, to one-off 12s by unknowns such as C Brand, that help to define a new sound. Soulful stompers are covered by the much- sampled ‘Over Like A Fat Rat’ by Fonda Rae and the stunning boogie groove of Rainbow Brown’s ‘It Ain’t No Big Thing’. • The Fonda Rae track showcases the involvement of the legendary Leroy Burgess, while Rainbow Brown were produced by the prolific Patrick Adams. Other big studio names (or more accurately soon-to-be-big names) that feature are Pinky Valasquez and Jellybean Benitez, who was one of the pioneers of the dance edit / remix. He is also renowned as the man who discovered Madonna. • The package comes with full illustrations of the original 12 inches and in-depth notes by co-compiler Chris Menist, that include exclusive interviews with many of the artists.
