Die 1890 entstandene viersätzige Suite ist charakteristisch für jene Schaffensperiode Debussys, in der er "moderne" und "altertümliche" Elemente vermischte. Der ursprünglich einen bäuerlichen Renaissancetanz bezeichnende Ausdruck "bergamasque" steht dabei als Chiffre für die "Fêtes galantes" des 18. Jahrhunderts, die Verlaine zu jener Gedichtsammlung inspiriert haben, in der auch der Mondschein ("Clair de lune") eine bedeutende Rolle spielt. Instrumentation : piano
