Originating from South America, this handsome specimen bares bright green foliage that emerges through the autumn months, followed by an abundance of vivid blue, lilac and purple star shaped flowers as early as March. Each flower head features a dark purple vein running along the centre of each of the pointed petals. The flowers emit a heavenly sweet aroma of honey whereas the leaves have a more unusual onion like scent when crushed. More commonly known as the starflower, Ipheion make perfect additions to patios, borders, pots and container and would not be out of place in alpine, cottage or scented gardens. They are extremely undemanding and easy to grow and would be a welcome addition to any garden in need of a sprinkling of colour. Bulbs will perform best in a sunny position in fertile, moist, well -drained soil that does not dry out at a depth of about 8cm, spacing them 5cm apart.
