They are a specialized aquatic predator and have specially developed flippers that allow them to speed through the water in search of prey. Sliding along on its stomach, this penguin is ready to slip into the water in search for some tasty fish. Although African penguins share the predominantly black and white body coloration common to most penguins, they have a unique and distinguishing bright pink gland above their eyes. 3.16 inches long and 2.34 inches wide, this figurine is about the size of a deck of cards. Sadly, due to its specific and singular habitat combined with detrimental human activities, the African penguin is considered endangered. It is primarily suffering from a loss of liveable habitat as well as a decline in its main source of food. Commercial fisheries that collect sardines and anchovies have forced African penguins to consume less healthy fish. Thankfully, in 2010 the African penguin was included in the U.S. Endangered Species Act, and in 2015 the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary was opened in South Africa, providing much needed aid for these amazing animals.
