One of the very few evergreen oaks planted in relativelly large numbers in Britain, mostly in coastal regions (naturalised in places). This evergreen oak was introduced to Britain about 400 years ago; it originates in the Mediterranean region. Shape of leaves and length of spines on the leaves varies plant by plant. Sometimes the leaves are very spiny - hence its specific name, derived from the Latin name of the holly. Often found near the coasts, the holm oak is rather sensitive to frost and suffers frost damage under -7--8 C especially if the soil is wet. Under garden conditions it rarely exceeds 10 metres in height but is usually a lot smaller than that. As it branches freely, it is ideal for bonsai and can be pruned as well - may be grown by a south facing wall as topiary. Can be kept on the patio in a large pot during the summer but if planten into a pot, best is to keep it frost free during winter.
