Product Description Shimano has used Shadow technology for years on their mountain bike rear derailleurs. Allows for a lower profile and places the derailleur further in, keeping them out of harm's way and allowing for better chain trajectory off the top jockey wheel relative to the cassette. Shimano's R9100 group is the first time we've seen this technology moved to the side of the road, and we're happy to see its inclusion in the Ultegra RD-R8000 rear derailleur. The RD-8000 is the crown jewel of the new Ultegra group, and if you're building or upgrading a bike, you really can't go wrong with this group. The extra range offered by the longer cage opens the Ultegra group to adventure bikes and brings precision, durability and value to the masses. Plus, if you just want to add a wider range to your Dura-Ace steed, adding the Ultegra Long Cage Derailleur and Cassette is all you need to spin perfect circles on long mountain passes. The shift is flawless, the durability is immaculate, and the performance gap with Dura-Ace is about the width margin of a tire in a sprint. Switching to an aluminum cage and a few other minor hardware details are all that separates the Ultegra R8000 version from the Dura-Ace 9100 drive. Two cage lengths are available with cassette ranges of 11-30t (short) and 11-34t (long). Given some design adjustments, the R8000 rear derailleur performs best when paired with R8000 or R9100 levers, and is a perfect match for a full Ultegra bike or those running Dura Ace who want to race a larger cassette. Another advantage of the Shadow design is the more linear trajectory of the derailleur when shifting, which allowed Shimano engineers to create a shift lever with a shorter shot, resulting in more precise and faster shifts, even with the larger cassette ranges we're starting to ride on everything from asphalt to gravel.
