Play as a mage and use your arcane essences to create strange artifacts. Activate their powers, increase your power, take control of dragons and win the game! In Res Arcana, each mage begins the game with an essence of each type, 3 artifacts in hand, and a magical object. During a game round, you collect essences, and perform one action per turn until everyone has passed. The goal is to have the highest number of victory points - 10 or more - during the victory control phase. Magi and magic items are chosen during the setup. At the end of each round, a player must replace their magic item with a new one. Each player has an individual card deck of 8 artifacts, 3 of which make up their starting hand. Artifacts are laid by paying their stake cost in essences and can eventually earn victory points. Some artifacts are creatures or dragons. Monuments and power places are placed in the center of the game table and available for purchase. The player who pays the cost of putting into play a monument or power place takes possession of it immediately and permanently. Monuments and power places are the main sources of victory points in the game. Game elements that have collecting abilities produce essences at the beginning of each round. Many game elements have one or more powers. Powers have costs and have effects. Many of these costs involve committing this element. It is then temporarily neutralized, except for its possible reaction powers. At the end of each round, a victory check is performed. If no player has won, the game elements are disengaged, and a new round starts.
