Hardy kiwi is a cousin of the brown fuzzy kiwi seen in most supermarkets and it is much more cold hardy than the plant of the commercially available fruit. It is also a great ornamental, having sweetly fragrant flowers and a good autumn coloration (yellow). Male and female flowers are born on different plants, so both males and females must be planted to have fruits (there are self fertile varieties though but the main species is dioecious). The plants often take several years to mature but then after, you can harvest up to 1000 fruits per plant when they are mature. Although the plants are extremely winter hardy, tolerating temperatures as low as -30 C, they develop shoots early in the spring that are sensitive to frost (it grows back however after the frosts are gone). Hardy kiwi are extremely vigorously growing vines, requiring a substantial supporting trellis. Despite the challenges, once one has sampled the fruit, kiwi growing seems well worth the trouble! The fruit is aromatic, with fuzzy kiwi, banana, strawberry and pear flavours. Issai is a self fertile variety - 1 plant will fruit.
