Sage & grapefruit – origin and history: Sage is native to the entire Mediterranean region where it thrives, but it also grows in our latitudes too. Sage can grow up to half a metre tall; it is a subshrub with thick, greyish leaves and blue-violet flowers. It is gathered before it blossoms from May to September. Sage has been treasured as a universal remedy for centuries. As far back as ancient Egyptian times, it was used as a remedy for infertility. In the sixth century, the plant was brought to central Europe by Benedictine monks. Father Kneipp (a German priest and pioneer of natural therapies) referred to sage as an “elixir of life par excellence”. The word “sage” is derived from the Latin word “salvare” meaning “heal”. Grapefruit is a very young fruit. We think that it was discovered around 1750 in Barbados as an accidental hybridisation between an orange and a pomelo. The name grapefruit is derived from the way the fruit grows together in grape-like clusters. This evergreen tree has dark green leaves which are thin and can grow up to 15 cm in length. The fruit flesh can be yellow, pink or red according to the variety, and is rich in vitamin C. The world’s main grower of grapefruit is the USA.
