Hippos are predominantly slate grey, although they have pink skin in many areas of their body. Despite their formidable nature, hippos are classified as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Although their global population is not declining as sharply as many other threatened and vulnerable species, it declining nonetheless due to habitat loss and fragmentation.
