This oak is known to have the most decorative foliage. During spring, the thick, dark green, lustrous leaves have pointed, toothed lobes which are very ornamental and add texture. If you have the space, this oak will give you a stunning display of colour when the leaves turn a deep red and purple during October. Without a doubt this tree would brighten up anyone’s garden. It is known to look best when planted solitaire in the middle of the lawn. After two decades you will begin to see fruits appearing, however an abundant acorn crop is produced almost every year. The seed can be roasted and used as a substitute to coffee, cooked or dried and ground into a powder to be used as a thickening in stews or mixed with cereals for making bread. When the leaves fall, they can be dried flat under pressure and can be used for craftworks and decorations. Fully hardy; it is a fast-growing tree, not too fussy to soil conditions and can withstand temperatures as low as -20c. For optimum growth, the plant prefers to be positioned in full sun or partial shade.
