How a zinc-air battery works The zinc air system has replaced the older mercury system. The construction of the battery uses the oxygen from the air outside the battery. Comparatively, zinc-air batteries have fewer battery changes, clearer tones, less volume adjustments and twice as long life, which means fewer battery changes for you. After removing the tab, air penetrates through the tiny holes. The oxygen of the air combines with the zinc to form zinc oxide. This reaction produces energy that supplies the hearing aid. The manufacturer seals the air holes of a battery with a protective film. This keeps the battery in an inactive state as long as it is not in use. Before inserting the battery into the hearing aid, peel off the protective film and wait for approx. one minute. During this time, air enters the battery and activates it. But please note that by resealing the protective film, the battery cannot be returned to an inactive state.
