Pitcher plant - Sarracenia - 9cm pot A natural fly catcher for your garden pond. Planting enough of them around a natural garden pond will significantly reduce the mosquito plague. The flies literally fall into the Sarracenia's throat. The nectar scent emerging from the tubes attracts the insects to the entrance of the trap. When they absorb the nectar on the smooth inside of the tubes, they slide down into the trap and eventually drown in the digestive fluid. Various species have a dormant phase in the winter months. The pitcher plants bloom in early spring. Their flowers have a particularly intense scent. As they are hardy to around -15°C, they are suitable for outdoor cultivation - on the banks of a pond or similar. The pitcher plants can grow quite large, which is why they should be repotted frequently. The large plants in particular need a lot of water in the summer months. The pitcher plants are also very suitable for outdoor cultivation in bog beds.
