Product Description The Cadillacs, Chevies and Buicks of the 1950s were fantasies of chrome and fin, streamlined icons of power. These classic ads and images reveal the 50s American auto in all its sleek elegance. Car ads offered a dream, a vision of empty freeways and suburban utopia. Advertisements reflected changes in habits, and admen saw that in the suburbs the husband was a commuter and rather than leave the car idling at the station for the day his wife drove him and picked him up. So women had an effect on car design, on things like power steering. Pink became a fashionable colour. Long gone were the days of Henry Ford’s ‘any colour as long as it’s black’. The future was coloured, and Chevrolet led the way with an amazing palette. The look of the 50s car had nothing to do with sense or economy (gas was cheap) – or the environment.
