The Kuksa is a traditional wooden mug that was mainly used as a drinking and eating vessel and for collecting berries. Unique to the Kuksa is its shape with a wide, horizontal handle. Originally, Kuksa was made with a knife or axe made of birch wood, but the Kuksa mug from Petromax is made of olive wood. Olive wood has the advantage of being scratch-resistant, hygienic and acid-resistant. In addition, olive wood does not absorb odours. The Kuksa is particularly versatile because it can be used with a capacity of 200 ml as a cup, soup bowl or serving bowl as well as for scooping and measuring. With the leather strap, you can wear the cup on a backpack or belt. The wood for the Kuksa handmade in Germany comes from the real olive tree (Olea europaea). These olive trees no longer bear fruit, so they can no longer be harvested. By felling these trees with unique wood grain, products from olive wood can be produced in a resource-saving manner. As the products have been finished with an oil-wax finish, they are particularly durable and ideal as outdoor kitchen accessories. The tradition stipulated that the Kuksa should never be washed, but only to be cleaned in a stream or river. You too can clean your Kuksa in the traditional way, but you can also clean it with mild detergent and clean water. Then you should always let the cup dry well, if necessary, you can also rub it with a thin film of olive oil. Direct sunlight and very high temperature jumps can damage the wood. Highly colouring liquids (e.g. red wine or blackberry juice) can affect the colour of the olive wood.
