From mid-summer through to autumn you will see purple flower spikes rise above the foliage to form a stunning display. The colourful foliage emerges in deep shades before maturing to a rich shade of burgundy. These plants make fantastic additions to patio containers and bedding displays, and are also great at making elegant dried flowers. Plant Fountain Grass into garden borders in any fertile, light, well drained garden soil, in full sun. Take care not to overwater as Pennisetum plants may rot in over-wet soils. Although plants are hardy, they will benefit from the added protection of a dry mulch of bark or straw to protect the crown of the plant over the winter. Once you have enjoyed the autumn and winter interest of this plant, you should cut back any dead foliage and faded flowers in the spring.
