2,500-8,000 SHU on the Scoville scale Botanically classified as Capsicum annuum, are the immature pods of one of the most popular peppers in the world and belongs to the Solanaceae or nightshade family. Jalapeño peppers are curved to straight pods, averaging 5 to 15 centimetres in length and 2 to 5 centimetres in diameter, and have a conical shape tapering to a rounded point on the non-stem end. The skin is smooth, taut, and glossy, ripening from dark green to red when mature. Underneath the surface, the thick flesh is crisp, green, and aqueous, encasing a central cavity filled with round and flat, cream-colored seeds. Jalapeño peppers have a bright, vegetal, and grassy flavour mixed with a mild to moderate level of spice.
