It was launched in 1991 as a tournament with 12 teams and expanded to 16 countries in the US in 1999 and 24 in Canada in 2015. The tournament begins with a group stage consisting of eight groups of four teams each, with the two best teams from each group advancing into a knockout tournament that starts with a round of 16 teams. The total number of games played increases from 52 to 64. The tournament replicates the format of the FIFA Men's World Cup used between 1998 and 2022. The official mascot of the tournament was unveiled on October 19, 2022. The name of the mascot is Tazuni, a suitcase word from the Tasmanian Sea and "Unity". He represents a small penguin (Eudyptula minor) endemic to New Zealand.
