Learn all the details of the Endeavour Copa America wooden model Discover the history and all the features of the wave-defying sailboat and competed against the best of its time in the America's Cup. History of the Endeavour Copa America The Endeavour was one of the most iconic J-class yachts in the history of the Copa America. It was designed by British naval architect Charles Nicholson and was built in 1934 by Camper & Nicholsons for British aviator Thomas Sopwith. The purpose of its creation was to challenge the United States in the Cup that same year and faced the Rainbow, the American defender. Endeavour presented superiority in previous competitions but failed to win the cup due to crew problems and tactical decisions. Still, it was considered one of the best designs of the time. The design of this ship was completely innovative, contained a Marconi rig, with aerodynamic sails that allowed for greater speed, a retractable orza that improved performance in difficult wind and sea conditions. The ship's hull was constructed of steel with bronze rivets. In addition to being beautiful, it also combined stability along with speed. The ship that debuted in the America's Cup in 1934, showed both technical and tactical superiority to its rival, Rainbow. However, they failed to get the cup due to an unexpected strike by the crew. Even so, they achieved an honorable second place and a before and after in the competition sail. After a few years of glory, the Endeavour lived decades of abandonment and deterioration. It was lost and sank but managed to be recovered, towed and sold for a very low price. And when it was believed that her story ended โฆ Elizabeth Meyer, a classic sailing enthusiast, recovered the deteriorated helmet in 1984. Elizabeth spent five years to completely restore the ship. And in 1989, the Endeavour again sailed the seas, completely renovated. Currently, the Endeavour is more than a yacht; it became the symbol of the golden age of sailing, the rebirth of the J-class and perseverance in the face of adversity.
