In many respects, racing engines cannot be compared with normal engines. Getting the maximum power out of them means continuously pushing them to the limit. They often work at very high speeds and/or boost pressures. This also places special demands on the spark plugs: temperature, pressure and vibrations in the combustion chamber are so extreme that conventional earth electrodes could break off or melt. That is why racing spark plugs often have specially developed earth electrodes, the most extreme form being the surface discharge design. The spark jumps from the centre electrode directly to the shell of the plug. Also, the resulting heat must be reliably dissipated. Racing spark plugs are available with higher heat values than normal spark plugs. NGK offers racing spark plugs with different heat values. If you are not sure about the heat value: Always choose a higher heat value first (= colder plug!). With NGK, the colder the plug, the higher the number (e.g. greater engine power = likely higher NGK heat range number required). Note: NGK racing spark plugs are intended for racing engines or racing use. Use in normal engines is not recommended, as racing spark plugs do not place any value on certain requirements that a normal engine has such as durability or protection against sooting (carbon fouling).
