Product description
Melianthus major 'Antonow's Blue' is a spectacular, rare variety of the Honey Bush, admired for its dramatic blue-green foliage with a shimmering silver finish. This improved selection boasts even larger, more deeply cut leaves with jagged, saw-toothed edges, making it one of the most impressive foliage plants you can grow. When crushed, the leaves release a sweet, peanut butter-like fragrance – a surprising sensory bonus. Though a half-hardy shrub, this fast-growing plant quickly forms an impressive feature by late summer, reaching up to 3m in height and 2m in spread. While it can produce maroon, honey-scented flower spikes followed by decorative seed pods, most gardeners grow it primarily for its stunning foliage. It’s perfect for exotic borders or large containers and pairs well with hot-coloured flowering plants. Growing Advice: In mild areas, plant in a sunny, sheltered spot with free-draining soil. For colder regions, grow in containers so they can be moved indoors before frost. Water regularly, especially container plants. Aftercare: In autumn or early spring, remove old stems to prevent legginess—though this may limit flowering. In open borders, protect the base with a thick dry mulch and wrap the plant in fleece over winter. Plants are slow to start into growth in spring, so patience is needed. Image may be included for illustration of supply but can vary due to seasonality changes (e.g. deciduous plants lose leaves in colder months). Decorative pots are not supplied.
