Product description
Athyrium 'Niponicum Metallicum' (Japanese painted fern) features unusual metallic silvery, finely textured fronds that unfurl in spring and create a luminous effect in shady parts of the garden. This hardy perennial returns every year and steadily spreads to fill awkward shady spots without taking over. Position in rich, well-drained soil, ideally amended with well-rotted farm manure, and plant near spring-flowering bulbs such as snowdrops or crocuses for a striking contrast. Fronds die back each autumn, leaving a crown to overwinter; new fronds emerge and curl open in spring. Suitable for full shade to partial shade, low maintenance and long-lasting in established planting schemes.
