Discover the award-winning Malus 'John Downie', a crab apple renowned for its culinary excellence, particularly for making delicious jelly. This attractive specimen tree bursts into life with charming pink buds that unfurl into delicate white, cup-shaped blossoms in spring. As autumn arrives, it is adorned with an abundance of large, striking orange and red fruits, offering a long season of visual interest and a bounty for your kitchen. Beyond its aesthetic appeal and culinary uses, 'John Downie' is a valuable asset to any garden ecosystem. It's self-fertile, meaning it can produce fruit on its own, and also serves as an excellent pollinator for nearby orchard apple trees. Once the fruits have softened after the first frosts, they become a vital food source for wild birds, supporting local wildlife throughout the colder months. Supplied on MM106 rootstock, this crab apple is ideal for smaller gardens. How to Grow Light: Full sun or partial shade. Temperature: Hardy, suitable for UK climates. Watering: Water well during dry spells, especially when the tree is establishing. Feeding: Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring. Humidity: No specific humidity requirements.
