Makita has issued a warning about the use of unofficial copies or imitations of the battery packs used in its cordless power tools. It says the unofficial packs are “unsafe due to no cell monitoring, the internal wiring is too small and many will only charge to half capacity.” Tony Coleman, technical and warranty manager for the company, says many of the non-OE batteries he has seen do not communicate with the battery charger. This lack of communication raises safety issues as a heavily used original battery will automatically be charged at a lower rate, but that facility is lost with the will-fit batteries. “Without the communication link the charger may not work at all,” he says. Having examined several non-standard batteries Mr Coleman says on some the internal wiring is too thin and could overheat during heavy usage and while there have been no reports of a fire starting, he says it is “a distinct possibility”. He also found that the capacity of an unofficial replacement 18 V battery pack is well below that of an original delivering only 1.6 Ah - despite being marked 3 Ah. The company strongly discourages the use of unofficial imitations or copy batteries or the modifications to the original. Makita says it cannot be held liable or responsible for any injury, degraded performance or hardware breakdown caused by the non-OE batteries and their use also invalidates the warranty. Mr Coleman says if the original batteries (pictured) are used correctly and recharged as soon as performance starts to drop rather than running them flat, the battery packs should last the life of the tool.
