Magnolia ‘Stellata’ is a well-known and much-loved classic – easy to grow, compact in size and exceptionally beautiful during spring, it’s no wonder it’s long been a favourite. This lovely specimen can be grown as a shrub or a small tree and is the perfect choice for bringing height, structure, screening and shade to a smaller space, such as a front garden or back-garden border, as well as providing a nice little nesting space for wild birds. The silky buds of this magnificent variety open to reveal exquisite white star-like blooms from early spring. These pretty flowers appear on the bare branches the tree and last for quite a long while in comparison to the tulip-flowered magnolia, before giving way to a dense covering of lush green leaves. You also can grow this variety in a large container where it can be easily pruned to maintain an even more compact size. Plant magnolias in a sunny or semi shaded position with protection from cold winds and hard spring frosts. Magnolias prefer a rich, moist, well drained, acid to neutral soil. Incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost to improve the soil prior to planting, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Water regularly throughout the growing season until young magnolias are fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted bark chips or garden compost to the base of the plant.
