Debussy had originally planned the work in view of the suite bergamasque (HN 381), but then published it individually in October 1904 and for good reason. He himself was so impressed by the brilliance and ingenuity of the work that he expressed himself variously in letters to his publisher Durand. In October 1904, he writes, "This is a really difficult piece. It seems to me to encompass the entire range of what one can ask for a piano, because it combines power and grace." After the premiere by the famous Catalan virtuoso Ricardo Viñes, it quickly became an audience success.
