It allows light through but is not see through/transparent. It is used to diffuse the light and spread the light. The diffuser is effective for ceiling light shades to hide the bulb and frame from sight when looking at the light shade. It is very easy to install, it sits at the bottom ring of the lampshade and fits all my lampshades. This lampshade will fit a standard bayonet cap (BC) fitting or Edison screw (E26 or E27) fitting.
